Design and Development
In the dynamic 1980s, Enstrom Helicopter Company was renowned for producing top-tier helicopters powered by horizontally-opposed piston engines. Responding to a United States Army requirement for a turbine-powered training helicopter, Enstrom innovatively designed a larger, turbine-powered version of its 280 Shark model. This ambitious design, named the TH28, marked a significant leap in helicopter technology.
Although the Army contract did not materialise, Enstrom's determination and foresight led to the commercial introduction of the Enstrom 480 in 1993. This model boasts the robust C20W variant of the Rolls-Royce Model 250 turboshaft engine, providing unmatched reliability and performance.
Advanced Design Features
The Enstrom 480 is engineered with a welded steel-tube framework, elegantly covered in aluminium with a streamlined tailcone. This robust structure ensures durability and safety. A distinctive feature of this helicopter is that the pilot controls the aircraft from the left seat, a unique arrangement in the helicopter world.
One of the standout characteristics of the Enstrom 480 is its lack of a hydraulic system. Instead, it utilises a sophisticated trim system that absorbs rotor feedback, allowing pilots to maintain precise control and a smooth flight experience. The powerful 480B engine is designed to produce 420 shp, but for optimal performance and safety, it is derated to 305 shp for 5 minutes and 277 continuous shp. This ensures exceptional power and reliability, even in challenging high-altitude and hot-temperature conditions.
The main rotor, with its impressive 32 feet diameter, and the 5 feet diameter tail rotor, provide exceptional stability and control. The entire rotor system, weighing a substantial 300 pounds, guarantees significant inertia, which is crucial during power loss scenarios, making autorotation landings remarkably smooth and safe.
